Local favourite Felipe Massa drove a perfect race to win today’s Brazilian Grand Prix from the pole. Behind him Fernando Alonso won the Drivers’ Championship despite a great drive from Michael Schumacher.
Schumacher had started 10th due to a failed fuel pump in yesterday’s final qualifying and was then relegated to the back of the field after making an extra pit stop on the eighth lap after cutting a tyre while passing Giancarlo Fisichella. Finally finishing fourth he showed the same determination as he had throughout his career even though it would have taken a miracle at that point for him to win another drivers’ title in his last attempt.

Heading into today’s Japanese Grand Prix Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher were level on points but Schumacher had a one-win advantage so, had he won and Alonso failed to score any points, he would have clinched the title no matter what happened in the season-ending event in Brazil.
In actual fact it was Alonso who won and Schumacher who failed to score a single point after his engine failed around the two-thirds distance.
Everything is still up for grabs in Brazil but it will take some incredible luck for Michael Schumacher to finish his career with another drivers’ title.
