Michael Schumacher Wins 2006 San Marino GP

Michael Schumacher didn’t just win today’s San Marino Grand Prix, he dominated it in a way that we haven’t seen since the 2004 season.

Apart from a few lead changes during the fuel stop cycles Schumacher led from start to finish, in what was obviously not the fastest car on the track, without ever having to resort to blocking on the narrow Imola circuit.

Runner-up Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap and stalked Schumacher for lap after lap, even changing his pit strategy to refuel early when he couldn’t get past the Ferrari on the track, but to no avail. After his second stop Schumacher rejoined the race right in front of the Alonso’s Renault where he had been before.

The icing on the cake for Schumacher was that his pole was his 66th, breaking the tie with Ayrton Senna for the only significant record that he didn’t already own.
